Overview

At our hospital, a medical college and a deemed-to-be university, we are proud to offer a fully functional, comprehensive Hematology and Hemato-Oncology Cancer Care Center. Strengthened by an advanced Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and Stem Cell Harvest Unit, our center has successfully established itself as a leader in the region for the management of complex blood cancers and classical hematological disorders.

Our BMT unit, housed separately on the 5th floor of our hospital, is thoughtfully located away from the busy outpatient and inpatient care areas, ensuring a calm and sterile environment crucial for transplant patients. This exclusive 5-bedded unit is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to cater to both adult and pediatric patients undergoing intensive treatments.

We take pride in having completed around 9 successful bone marrow transplants, covering a wide range of conditions including various types of leukemias, lymphomas, and classical hematology disorders. Each transplant is a result of dedicated teamwork, precision, and unwavering commitment to patient care.

Our team consists of 4-5 specialized hematologists who work in close coordination to manage complex adult and pediatric hematology cases. They are supported by a skilled group of trained nurses, proficient in barrier nursing techniques, care of neutropenic sepsis, and transfusion management — all vital aspects of successful post-transplant care.

Adding strength to our services, our Department of Transfusion Medicine plays a pivotal role. It facilitates not just routine transfusion support but also stem cell harvesting and cryopreservation — a critical facility for both autologous and allogeneic transplants.

Bone marrow transplant has become an essential treatment modality for difficult-to-treat or relapsed blood cancers, offering the possibility of longer, durable remissions. In these procedures, patients typically undergo an average hospital stay of about a month. The selection of a suitable donor, usually a family member, is based on HLA matching — ranging from fully matched related donors to haploidentical (50% matched) donors. The degree of match influences both the success rates and potential complications associated with the transplant.

Beyond clinical care, our hospital is immensely supported by an active Medical Social Work (MSW) team, who tirelessly assist in securing financial aid for patients. Their efforts ensure that cost barriers do not prevent deserving patients from accessing cutting-edge therapies, diagnostics, and supportive care.

Looking ahead, we are committed to expanding our services, reaching more patients, and contributing to improved survival outcomes and quality of life for those battling hematological malignancies. Together, as a multidisciplinary team, we continue to strive towards excellence in patient care, education, and research in hematology and hemato-oncology.
